This requires a new way forward, one that turns the traditional communications and marketing paradigm on its head. Edelman’s approach is ‘communications marketing’, a discipline which helps brands and enterprises earn trust, attention and relevance in a rapidly changing world.

Edelman Japan, while maintaining its strong base in PR, has been strengthening its penetration of the traditional marketing domain—the purview of the advertising agencies. During the eligibility period, it hired 20 people, including a creative director from a leading advertising agency, creative talent from various Tokyo agencies. It also added a designer, a planner and a research professional, as well as a plethora of corporate, consumer and healthcare professionals, some with acclaimed journalist backgrounds, to strengthen its current offering.

Edelman Japan views itself as “truly a microcosm of a global company”, celebrating diversity—of culture, of background, of experience and thought—and recognising it as a key to its ability to deliver insightful and creative client programmes. During the eligibility period, it increased its headcount by 45 percent and grew revenue dramatically. Edelman believes this has been achieved with the right mix of smart, creative people who have been focused on providing solutions to its clients.
